Over the past 10 years the UNESCO Special Envoy has been traveling extensively to bring together leaders and key decision makers and raise awareness for the alarming literacy crisis that effects every nation, both in the Netherlands, in Europe and worldwide. Dozens of conferences, high level meetings, advocacy workshops and dialogue sessions have been organized. The mission of the Special Envoy is to put SDG 4 (education), more specific SDG 4.6 (literacy) higher up on the political agenda. SDG 4.6 is:
By 2030, ensure that all youth and a substantial proportion of adults, both men and women, achieve literacy and numeracy.
How can we work together to raise the literacy rates worldwide? This is the mission of the Special Envoy.
